The holidays are a special time to share with family and friends. However, the hectic pace and quest to make everything perfect also bring many opportunities for accidents on the road and in our homes.
Holiday Driving Safety Tips
With an estimated 33 million people traveling over the winter holidays, even one minor mistake or misjudgment could cause a serious problem for you and your family. Here are some tips you should check out prior to hitting the road:
Before leaving, you should always check the weather conditions and traffic reports. Avoid construction whenever possible and map out precise directions to your destination. It is also a good idea to keep a safety kit in the car in case of emergency. Make sure your car is ready for harsh winter conditions by having it serviced before a road trip.
Always allow for extra time. Rushing increases your chances of getting into an accident. It is better to be late and safe than to risk hurting yourself or others.
When attending parties, practice moderation. Eating too much can make you uncomfortable and lethargic, which can ultimately distract you during your ride home. And more importantly, do not drink and drive! Do not allow anyone who has consumed too much alcohol to drive. Taking the keys away from someone who has had too much to drink can save his life, as well as protect others who are on the road. According to MADD (Mothers Against Drinking and Driving) this year almost 11,000 people will die in drunk driving crashes - one every 50 minutes; responsible celebrating will prevent you, a friend or family member from becoming part of this statistic.
It is always important to review your automobile policy prior to making any long trips so you are aware of your coverage. Do you have collision coverage on your vehicle? What about towing and rental? What happens if a rock hits your windshield or if your car slides into a ditch? Do you have your updated insurance card in your car and would you know who to call? It is especially important to know what coverage you have if a friend or family member asks to drive your car. In the state of Illinois, your auto coverage follows the vehicle, so be sure you trust someone before turning the car keys over to them as you will be responsible for their actions. Holiday Home Safety Tips
Fires are an all too unfortunate occurrence during the holiday season. With people trying to get into the holiday spirit, they often forget some simple ways to protect themselves when decorating their homes. In making your house the brightest on the block, make sure your lights are properly plugged in and not overloading any outlet. Be sure to inspect and replace any lights that flicker, have loose connections, frayed or cracked sockets. Never use indoor lights when decorating the outside of your home, as they are not designed for outside use and could cause a fire. All lights should be UL approved.
When decorating a tree with lights, fasten them securely to the tree and make sure that no bulbs come in contact with needles or branches. Check wires regularly. If they become warm, unplug the lights immediately. Do not leave your tree lighted when leaving home or going to bed.
Careless use of candles is a major cause of fire at any time of year, but especially at the holidays. Make sure candles are placed away from curtains, decorations or any other flammable material and are not placed within a child's reach. Also, never leave candles unattended.
Be careful with decorations that can be may be harmful to children and pets. Holly berries, mistletoe and other plants contain poisonous materials that can cause serious illness if swallowed and tinsel and ribbon can be easily choked on. Keeping your family safe is the best gift you can give.
