The NFIP, also known as the National Flood Insurance Program, was put in place in 1968 when damaging floods affected numerous homes along the Mississippi River. The Flood Disaster Act was signed into law in 1973 and required that homes located within areas that were designated as a special flood hazard carried flood insurance to protect the lender's interests. Flood plains were created, and maps were drawn to define actual boundaries that defined areas at high risk for flooding.
