January is National Blood Donor Month! Here are a few ways you can do your part.
January doesn’t just mark the beginning of a new year, it marks a new opportunity for you to really make a difference! Why? It’s National Blood Donor Month. This month has been commemorated since 1970 in an effort to inspire people to give blood since most hospitals and blood banks experience a shortage during this time of year, thanks to the busyness of the holidays, flu season, and a variety of other factors.
Should you get involved in National Blood Donor Month? Yes! If you’re healthy, weigh no less 110 pounds, and are at least 17 years old, you can save as many as three lives by donating just a pint of your blood.
You might think a pint sounds like a lot, but it will take you just 15 minutes or less to give that much blood and your body will easily replace it in 24 hours. By donating this fluid, that your body can quickly replenish, you can save a life!
The easiest way to give blood is to sign up to donate in advance. Drink lots of water and eat a good meal before your donation, then bring your ID with you to your appointment. You’ll complete a mini-physical, donate blood, and then be provided with free snacks and drinks to recuperate!
