Offer support this National Suicide Prevention Month.
Every year, more than 41,000 take their own lives, leaving behind loved ones who are confused and devastated by the loss. Unfortunately, suicide is a growing epidemic that people are often too ashamed or scared to talk about. Rather than allowing this worrying trend to continue, National Suicide Prevention Month encourages people to come forward with their personal stories and offer resources to those who may be struggling with suicidal thoughts. In addition to preventing more suicides, this month is dedicated to helping those affected by suicide find the support and comfort they need to recover from their loss.
This September, help spread awareness for National Suicide Prevention Month by sharing your personal experiences and offering support to your friends and followers. Be sure to tag your posts with the hashtags #SuicidePrevention and #StigmaFree to join the others who are working to spread awareness.
If you or someone you know is experiencing an emergency, call 911 immediately. If you or someone that you know is going through a difficult time and having suicidal thoughts, then call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273 TALK (8255). If you feel uncomfortable reaching out with a call, then you can also text “NAMI” to 741-741 to exchange free messages with a trained crisis counselor on the Crisis Text Line.
NAMI, or the National Alliance on Mental Illness, also offers a variety of resources for those struggling with suicidal thoughts and for those who are affected by suicide. Please head to their website HERE to explore their resources and speak to a professional if necessary.
